QUOTES FROM THE SURVEY

quote The front page of this site says: This web site is an independent source of information regarding the development of the Driffield Cattle Market site. Unfortunately that is just what the site is not. It gives no fair coverage of the pros of Plan A---for the development of a superstore on the cattle market---and is obviously just a front for the 'anti' lobby! quote

quote I understand that the cattle market has now been given planning permission - subject to Government approval. The news item on the radio last week said it would be a Tesco supermarket. Does that mean that Driffield will have 2 Tesco supermarkets or will they give up their Kwik Save/current site?? There has been no mention of this in the local papers. quote

quote I have something to add to the debate concerning the number of large vehicle movements required to service the proposed supermarket on the cattle market. In Driffield every Thursday is market day and the town centre is closed to through traffic from 6.00AM to 6.00PM, during these hours a large volume of this traffic transits Driffield via Albion Street and Wansford road. This includes all through bus services which in this 12 hour period amounts to some 35 bus movements, in addition to this there is the town bus service and many school buses which need to negotiate Albion Street at the start and end of the school day. Can the following question be put to one of the locally elected representivies who seem to be so keen on this scheme, when a large articulated goods vehicle travelling in one direction meets a large bus or coach travelling in the other in a very narrow road who gives way to whom. Will the police or traffic wardens be on hand for the complete 12 hour period in order to assist drivers and direct traffic as the inevitable grid lock ensues? A large vehicle requires a large amount of space, yellow lines, pedestrian crossings and mini roundabouts are one solution to keeping the roads clear but are totally useless when faced with a disabled parking permit. Just look at the main street and count the number of cars parked either legally or illegally on yellow lines.. The driver of a large vehicle does not have the freedom to drive over and squash stationary cars, a parked car is a parked car and must be driven round. This note concentrates on one issue, it does not even address the question does Driffield need another large supermarket? This proposal in its present form is in my opinion ill conceived, the implications of is imposition have not been thought through. Theory is fine, in practice though it has all the ingredients of a good old fashioned British cock up. quote

quote Plan B does not stand a chance because there will never be the funding for it. Plan A is therefore the only viable option and also represents the best hope for the future of Driffield as a commercial centre. The plan will benefit residents by extending choice and will benefit traders by retaining more business in the town. quote

quote i believe that driffield council are choosing to get a one sided view, as almost everyone i have spoken to are all for this development ask anyone where they do their main shop and the answer is usually ; morrisons at beverley or asda, kingswood. So please let the town develop. quote

quote Plan B with a low rise multi story car park would be advantageous. With cafe and leisure facilities around the water feature. It would still need to be comercialy viable to sustain it into the future after the initial build. Unfortunately it would look onto the other side of the stream and the monstrous rear of main street. And privately owned land with business use that is no longer suitable for a modern town centre. quote

quote I have just heard that the council have approved proposals for a supermarket development on the cattle market and I am appalled at their short sightedness. Yes, develop the area but not with another supermarket, please. One town counciller said he was ashamed of the state of the area at the moment, yet I am sure he doesn't live directly within view of the place. Nor will he or his family be affected by the turmoil a supermarket being sited in this area will bring not only to the local residents but to the smaller, more interesting shops in Driffield that help make it, still, a town with it's own heart and not an identikit town like so many others these days. Supermarkets are not interested in loacal communities, they are only interested in profits and their shareholders; they are not interested in giving their suppliers fair deals for the produce, again it is profit driven. Driffield desperately needs to retain it's original identity and spirit and a development on the cattle market site of new affordable housing, small retail units, an arts centre & cinema would do more for the town in the long term than any supermarket ever could. This campaign against a supermarket there now needs to go national and the aid and assistance of the media and supporters of a true rutal identity needs to be enrolled. quote

quote I live at kirkburn but lived in Driffield until i was 30. i own a property in Exchange Street, so i suppose i qualify to comment. Having read the press for the last several months i cannot believe the total disregard to the access problems that will occur if planning is approved for a superstore on the cattle market site and adjoining areas. Lets just look at the facts. To turn an articulated truck into exchange street at the traffic lights is difficult enough and then to turn into Eastgate South at the Spread eagle would be nearly impossible and likewise maneuvering round the bend at Albion st and travelling along eastgate south by Mariners would be even more tricky, remember general traffic in the area will increase 10 fold because they are all going to the new super market!Surely it must be a none starter. Make them see sense tomorrow and good luck. quote

quote Short of a large array of pubs, there is little else in driffield for the way of entertainment I enjoy. Where's the cinema or small bowling alley? Surely a town of this size and the number of surrounding villages could support it! Hull now has a whopping 4 cinema's that I can think of that are all major chain cinema's. Granted it's only a 20-30 minute drive to kingswood to cineworld or hollywood bowl, but after driving to and from hull to work, i don't want to drive back again in the evening, heck I might not want to even drive anywhere but being one of the few drivers amongst my friends any social event out of town involves me driving and thus drinking coke if we don't want to be shafted over the price of public transport! quote

quote Let's hope that the planning committee see sense and reject the plans that will see many HGVs clogging up Albion Street and Eastgate South. quote i think we should have another supermarkert to ensure tesco does not continue to have monopoly over the town, however i think it more important that we preserve our local trade which we will not be ale to do with anotehr supermatrket. driffield has expansded rapidly ove ther last few years and some loacal ammenities would be beneficial if they are setup to be flexibile enough to accomodate the changing needs of the town\'s people. the retail outlets should be big enough in terms of space to attract chain store interest and be able to get a good selsction of products in each shop. Tiny outlets will not attract chainstores as it is not worth it to them. quote

quote My main concern is the car parking. Driffield desperately needs a car park the size and location of the present cattle market car park. I worry that this facility in its present form will disappear. If people cannot park easily in the town it's inevitable they will go elsewhere. I know I would! The car park is even busier on market day, where will everyone park then? It's so short-sighted. I have a business in the town and worry where my customers will park. Where will everyone who currently works in Driffield park because I'm sure there will be restricted parking hours when it is developed. I have no preference what goes on the site as long as there is enough parking. The area needs to be tidied up and developed in some way. quote

quote Any retail outlets could be guaranteed "affordable rents" for local Driffield retailers (much like "affordable housing" for local house buyers). We'd be less likely to see so many empty shops then. I also feel that as much of the current parking space as possible should be retained, maybe beautified with a bit of greenery, but not diminished as we will need more, not less, if the development is a success. quote Driffield desparately needs somewhere for its young people - cinema, bowling alley. A hall for meetings and exhibitions would be an advantage. Driffield certainly does not need another supermarket - not on the cattle market site. We are a small market town with adequate small businesses which the large stores will put at risk. Our highways are quite simply not suitable for the heavy transport delivering to the proposed stores. quote

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK - CLICK HERE

quote In my opinion to allow Tesco or any other supermarket to be situated on the cattle market would be sheer lunacy. Eastgate is far too narrow for the huge lorries that are delivering to the current Tesco let along the bigger ones to come. The houses down Eastgate were never designed to take the amount of traffic that would pass their doors. Plan B is a golden opportunity to give us a part of Driffield that would be the envy of all other market towns and make us truly Capital of the Wolds. quote

quote We would like a cinema/youth centre so we can have leisure in our community safely. Lorries are dangerous for people crossing the roads - plans for large supermarkets will cause this. quote

quote We need a holistic future for Driffield, arts centre and cinema, and we should be encouraging a whole shopping experience in Driffield, therefore encouraging more individual retail outlets not more supermarkets. TELL US WHAT YOU THINK - CLICK HERE

quote We feel that existing supermarket provision is adequate. Our town is unique in the district for its number of small retail outlets. These small shops already attract visitors to the town. The addition of more small specialist units offering different ranges of locally produced goods would benefit our town. quote With the proposal of Aldi and a bigger Tesco we do not need any more supermarkets in Driffield. What is needed is a community based project to include cinema, bowling, arts centre, youth club etc. The roads in Driff 9 area are not suitable for large delivery wagons. quote A community based scheme would benefit the local community and not a multinational retailer. The ERYC must make sure that there are enough parking spaces for the residents - if the car park is sold off what happens to the people who park there everyday to maybe shop or work in Driff. It's a no no to a superstore on Driff 9. Heavy lorries on small streets will cause such a lot of congestion and accidents. One question - who runs Driffield, ERYC or Tesco? quote As a newcomer to Driffield. I have walked the cattle market site and see a fascinating mix of properties - all a 'hotch ptoch' - no cohesion. What links them all? Time and people. Could this become a centre which tells the story? The Driffield History. The Past - a museum. The Present - an arts centre, an information centre, medical provision, school life linking youth in the community. quote

The proposed location for a new one in Lockwood Street is impractical because of the access to traffic in one of the most congested streets in the town. A further supermarket would kill off what is left of traditional shopping and only bring low cost jobs. A leisure facility is required. Very little is available for young and old. quote Driffield does not need another large supermarket. We have a real need for a community centre - the existing one is too small and poorly built. Young people need somewhere to socialise apart from pubs. One of the attractions of Driffield for visitors is it still contains some small, independent retailers who give excellent service - more would be welcome. The beck should be made a feature of the development. Some free parking should be included. This is an opportunity to develop a large area of the town and really enhance it. Nor should there be any retail units on the site as our town struggles to keep businesses on the go as it is. quote I live on Eastgate South - the Road is narrow and busy with traffic and is a potential threat to pedestrians. Frequently vehicles are unable to pass each others and this often results in cars and lorries mounting the path outside my home. On several occasions they have brushed past me and my daughter has had to jump out of the way because lorries have been driven up onto the path. I would like to know why the traffic control planning officer believes that any road around the cattle market would be suitable for a large increase in heavy vehicles? When I asked that question at the meeting on 5th November I was told that we weren't there to discuss traffic flow and all the implications associated with it. Why is it not necessary to be worried about the volume of traffic which will pass our homes? Any suggestion of large retail units being built on the site will inevitably bring with it a large increase in lorries delivering goods with no suitable way in or out of the cattle market. If Driffield has the capacity for extra retail units they should be placed on the high street using the space where the empty shops are now quote

Keep small businesses and the character of the main street - another supermarket (even though Tescos have too much monopoly - Lidl isn't an adequate competitor and could be a much better store) would finish the small shops. Traffic was also a major problem, with narrow roads and large wagons. I like the fact there here in Driffield you still go to the bakers, butchers and grocers, or have the option of a couple of supermarkets to choose from, rather than an option of which supermarket only. The downside to moving here is that on an evening apart from going to Hull or Beverley there isn't a lot else to do regarding cinema, bowling, a good choice of restaurants or other social activities. quote I believe Driffield does not need anymore supermarkets. This development will cause new traffic problems, which Tesco already bring to the town. A superstore on Driff9 will take customers away from the main area of good local shops. I also believe that Tesco will badly affect the local shops and another large store in the town would certainly do the same. I think anything that adds to the value and enhances the town must be considered. I believe the community centre, which would allow art and social displays, would encourage many. All the [Plan B] proposals as stated would be excellent for youngsters and affordable housing must be considered and the bandstand and green area would enhance this scene. A few small retail units would work, if they were a different and enhancing trader, not one that would strangle the good family shops that we have in the town. To have any town remain strong and vibrant you of course need a long stay car park. If most of the long stay parking is lost no development will succeed and it will almost certainly kill off our thriving market town as we know it. quote

The town needs more recreational facilities in the town for all ages. A supermarket would be better located out of town centre. quote

quote SAFETY ISSUES are my main concern. A superstore should not be put on the cattle market site because the traffic on Albion Street is already very heavy, calling at Costcutter, Petrol Station, Repair Garage, BOSCH, bus station, the vets, coal yard and Farmway - where very often large lorries have to park on the street (recently one was on Albion Street for 25 minutes) waiting for access to Farmway. Further housing is proposed off Albion Street which will add to the traffic. Albion Street is used by fire engines, police cars, ambulances, school run cars, school buses, and school children going to both the junior and senior schools, by foot and by cycle. What are the Driffield Ward Councillors thinking about in supporting the scheme!! Perhaps its their party politics and friends in "high" places? Also New Road is the main entry road to town and emergency vehicles use it - especially fire engines from Brid Road so the huge HGVs would be a problem as I think they would cause the road to become blocked. On market day people walk along here to catch busses at the school corner. This road is the access road to schools, the hospital and the cemetery for a lot of people so is very well used by pedestrians too. There are solicitors, dentists, a church, some shops as well as private dwellings on the length of Exchange Street and New Road, all of which would be effected. Not to mention all the side roads leading to the North and South. Further serious problems would arise for the schools - especially the junior schools. Children start there aged 7. quote A launderette this is open on a weekend with at least three dryers would be most useful especially for those people who do not have either the space/finances for a tumble dryer of their own. quote

quote Marks and Spencer quote

quote We need some facilities for familys. Kids entertainment etc, places such as cinema, bowling alley. Driffield Heritage Centre. NOT another supermarket. quote

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK - CLICK HERE

quote It would be very nice to have a Marks and Spencer store. quote

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK - CLICK HERE

quote I suggest if you build a new Tescos in the cattle market you make the old Tescos two storey (better foundations maybe) and convert to put a bowling alley on ground floor and a cinema above it. quote

quote Lets wake Driffield up and bring in some fun places for all ages to enjoy. Supermarkets make enough money. quote

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK - CLICK HERE

quote We need another supermarket to keep prices down in Tesco and for healthy competition but a different site to Cattle Market. Roads surrounding Cattle Market are totally not suitable for large lorries etc. quote

quote No more infernal supermarkets quote

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK - CLICK HERE

quote Would not like to see the big car park go (next to the Cattle Market). quote

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK - CLICK HERE

quote There needs to be more places for teenagers to go so they are not hanging about the streets and causing trouble. quote

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK - CLICK HERE

quote Whatever is decided we need to look at the town centre as a whole, ie access roads, increased traffic movement. Why not make the town centre from George Street to traffic lights at Exchange Street a pedestrian zone say from 10am to 4pm Mon to Sat and provide an alternative ring road around the town. Although another supermarket would provide price competition to existing ones, increased traffic movement needs to be considered. quote

quote Public access from Eastgate and Albion Street in adequate because of width of streets. (HGV problem as old Cattle Market - manoeuvring). quote

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK - CLICK HERE

quote I would really prefer no alternation at all. Every precaution should be taken not to alter Driffield's unique market town character [to] which so many other topwns have succumbed. quote

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK - CLICK HERE

quote A large library would be nice. A cinema, a well presented car park with seating areas. Public houses, steak house. Memorial cow or statue reminding us of cattle market good times. This areas is a beautiful area and should be kept as such with the beck running through. quote

quote Definitely PLAN B quote

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK - CLICK HERE

quote Tescos need competition. We don't need more housing in the centre of Driffield. An appropriate inclusion would be a Marks & Spencer food outlet. A cinema/arts centre is a good idea (like the one in Pocklington). A decently landscaped free carpark should be built to attract shoppers/visitors to the town or to compete favourably with Brid, Beverley, Hull, Scarborough who all charge for parking. I think the high street is the place for internet cafes. quote

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK - CLICK HERE

quote As long as we have plenty of free parking for working people in Driffield and shoppers. Don't take the main street of Driffield away. I don't want to see loads of empty shops on main street. quote

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK - CLICK HERE

quote With the increased building of properties in and around Driffield Plan B would be a better idea. A bus stop and taxi rank would also be needed. Build anymore supermarkets and Driffield's character will be lost. Small shops will then become a thing of the past. quote

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK - CLICK HERE

quote Driffield certainly needs improved supermarket facilities but: quote

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK - CLICK HERE

quote We already have too may large lorries delivering to Farmways in Albion Street. More lorries taking deliveries to a superstore would create unbelievable congestion. Do remember that on market day the buses use Albion Street. quote

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK - CLICK HERE

quote Lets use the opportunity to develop the price town centre site for the good of Driffield. We need community facilities not a great big supermarket selling what is already available in the town. Also, how can anyone realistically think that Drif 9 can be serviced safety by large lorries. This opportunity will never present itself again, we need to get it right. quote

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK - CLICK HERE

quote We feel that whatever else is built that a place for the youth of Driffield which will help in the long run as most of the young people will appreciate the environment more and be a lot more community aware. We will also need sesparately a place for parking if we are trying to encourage more people into down to use these facilities be they shops or theatre, cinema etc. quote

quote Choice from Tescos. quote

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK - CLICK HERE

quote We do not need another supermarket but housing (perhaps senior housing so they can walk into Middle Street) is fine and any of the community centres would be a huge plus for our town. Keep on banging away to try and get this through to ERYC that this is a great chance to improve lifestyle in Driffield for all age groups. My fear is they will sell out - take the money - we are left with their choice not ours. quote

quote Driffield's special school, Kingsmill, is looking for a new site as its current location on Victoria Road is no longer suitable due to its small size and very high demand for places. I feel that there is a need for a youth centre and possibly a multi-agency children's centre as well. quote

quote NO MORE SUPERMARKETS quote

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK - CLICK HERE

quote I am a visitor to Driffield. The town obviously has a wealth of local businesses, having supermarket would have an impact on them. It is refreshing to see local produce - bakeries, clothes shops etc. The youth and elderly need places to go to keep them in the area, therefore keeping Driffield alive. quote

quote Access for a supermarket is a major problem, narrow roads etc. Skerne Avenue proposal for a supermarket makes more sense. quote

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK - CLICK HERE

quote Retain car park and redevelop cattle market as a health centre avoiding building behind Lockwood Street which si already congested. quote

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK - CLICK HERE

quote I would like to see these amenities because the young folk need somewhere to go and in Driffield they are stuck at home. quote

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK - CLICK HERE

quote I would prefer amenities in Driffield as the youngsters need somewhere to go instead of hanging about in the streets. Driffield is bad enough for traffic without adding this to the problem! quote

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK - CLICK HERE

quote I would a supermarket but out of town so parking will not be a problem. quote

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK - CLICK HERE

quote We DO NOT need another supermarket, we have 2 already and plenty of other food retail outlets. We need to support local business and local livelihoods. Plan B is excellent - we need social amenities for all ages (this may well reduce mindless and expensive vandalism in Driffield and surrounding villages/towns). If such amenities were available many more people would travel into Driffield and help the community/economy thrive and increase the quality of life for all. We could become a flagship for community enterprise and the envy of other towns. Long live the uniqueness of Driffield! quote

quote An adequate car park must be created to cater for shops etc in Middle Street North and South so as not damage businesses. quote

quote Plan D - retain car park! quote

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK - CLICK HERE

quote We visit Driffield from Hull especially for the variety of individual and independent shops which make it a fantastic high street. If a large supermarket opens these may disappear - as in Beverley where they've been replaced by more expensive 'tourist' shops etc. quote

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK - CLICK HERE

quote Driffield is a market town and should remain so. One supermarket is enough for a town the size of Driffield. quote

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK - CLICK HERE

quote I think Plan B is more acceptable for the people of Driffield as a whole, also to the public like us who like to shop at the "small interesting shops". quote
